Oaxaca's mezcal magic - a must-do experience - As a wine enthusiast who has studied wine for years, I approached this mezcal tour with an open mind—and it was an unforgettable experience. Spending the afternoon with Alvaro, I gained a deep appreciation for mezcal, its parallels with wine, and the pride Oaxaca’s people have in this spirit, which is deeply woven into their culture. Alvaro’s passion was evident as he welcomed us into his family distillery, sharing his expertise and stories about mezcal. Learning about agave and the intricate production process was fascinating, but the real highlight? Tasting far too many bottles! I left with two to bring home to Singapore—perfect for sharing with friends. If you’re visiting Oaxaca, this is an experience you can’t miss!

Way beyond our best expectations! - Alvaro is a fantastic human and so passionate and knowledgeable about every part of the process from farming to distillation. We sample roughly 14 mezcals from many diffeeent species of agave and had an amazing Oaxacan meal following it all. He was patient and honestly just a pleasure to spend a day with. The ranch was spectacular and the distillery gorgeous. If you're considering a Mezcal tour, I can't say enough good about this one!

Amazing Mezcal Experience!! - This tour exceeded all of our expectations. Alvaro and Oscar showed us the world of mezcal through a visit to the farm, the distillery and topping it off with an amazing lunch. Alvaro was knowledgeable, fun and simply a delight. Highly recommend … well worth it!!

Alvero was a great host! - The distillery itself is a marvel of rustic charm and authenticity. The copper stills, wooden fermentation vats, and stone tahonas (mills) are all integral parts of the mezcal-making process

We were looking for an... - We were looking for an authentic mezcal experience for our last day in Oaxaca, away from the shuttle busses and hoards of tourists, and this exceeded our expectations. Alvaro did an incredible job introducing us to the process of mezcal making, and we left having felt that we made a good friend. Our enjoyment was his biggest concern, and we would love to visit again. Couldn’t recommend more

Nonsense excuses! - We had to meet across town at 9am, I received an email at 12:15am to say our guide had stomach issues! Had to rebook for the next day with assurances I would be contacted by early evening the night before. No contact, I reached out twice to ask if it was still on, no responses. At 5:46am the day of, the guide txt to say he was in hospital. Don’t use this company!

Bait & switch - I cannot recommend this mezcal tour with Alvaro. I intentionally booked it, because of the good reviews and authentic experience. However, the night before the tour, Alvaro messaged me to see if we could start 2 hours later. I let him know that was fine. However, when my husband and I showed up, Alvaro wasn't there and we were part of a different tour, the Mezcal Journey (also available on Viator). Alvaro never mentioned this, and when I messaged him again to ask, he said he runs this tour together with his cousin. While we made the most of the tour, it was not what we signed up for and I felt like it was deceiving of Alvaro to bait and switch the offer. The tour description says there is a limit of 10 people, but there were 15 people on our tour, which made it sometimes difficult to hear and less intimate than I expected. The tour also lasted 6 1/2 hours, instead of 4-5 hours, which caused us to be extremely rushed for our dinner reservation. When I messaged Alvaro afterwards, he agreed to a partial refund, which we both thought was fair (50% of the fee he received from Viator). After several messages back and forth, it's now been a month since the tour and I've yet to receive a refund. This all could have been avoided if Alvaro followed through with the tour I signed up for or better communicated ahead of time that the change in plans was more than the start time. Overall, I feel like I didn't get the experience I expected and paid for. Charging tourists a hefty price and not delivering is fraud, so I can't recommend this tour.
