Highlights
  • Plaça Mossèn Sebastià Grau, 1 - Embark on a guided hike from Sant Elm to the La Trapa Monastery. Enjoy the natural beauty of Mallorca and the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, and explore the charming village of Sant Elm. This walk is circular and has a moderately low ascending difficulty. The highlight of the route is the spectacular views of Sa Dragonera (“The Dragon Island”), which lies just offshore on the southwest part of Mallorca, the 400-year-old “Torre de Cala ses Bassets” Watchtower, and, of course, the ruins of Sa Trapa Monastery, originally a Trappist Monastery which since the 1800s was abandoned and fell into deterioration, ruin and obliviation. In 1980, this place was acquired by the Balearic Nature Protection Organization, which started to rebuild some monuments. La Tapa has been declared a “Special protection area for birds” and a “Wildlife refuge.” Among its values are 14 varieties of Orchids and 16 endemic species of plants and birds, such as the Balearic Warbler, Osprey, Black Vulture, and Eleonor ́s Falcon. The area around La Trapa is being slowly rebuilt, and the idea is to become a hikers’ refuge one day. For many, it also is the first or the last stage along the GR-221.
