From Waves to Volcanoes: A Surfer’s Adventure in Arenal

Trading the surfboard for hiking boots, I embarked on a journey to the Arenal Volcano. With lush trails, a feast of local flavors, and soothing hot springs, this adventure was a refreshing change from the waves.

A Journey to the Heart of Arenal

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as we set out on our adventure to the Arenal Volcano. The air was crisp, and the promise of a day filled with exploration and relaxation hung in the air. As someone who spends most of his time chasing waves and writing about the ocean’s embrace, the idea of hiking through a rainforest and soaking in hot springs was a refreshing change of pace.

Our guide, Wilmer, was a beacon of knowledge and patience. With a group of twelve plus a baby, he managed to keep us all engaged and safe. His careful driving and attention to detail were evident from the start. As we approached the Arenal Volcano Observatory, the anticipation grew. The volcano, once one of the most active in the world, now stood dormant, a majestic reminder of nature’s power.

The trails were a tapestry of lush vegetation, with epiphytes, bromeliads, and orchids painting the landscape. The sounds of toucans and parrots filled the air, creating a symphony of nature that was both calming and invigorating. Wilmer’s guidance was invaluable as we navigated the rocks to the waterfall, ensuring everyone, including the little ones, could enjoy the experience safely.

A Feast for the Senses

After our hike, we were treated to a buffet lunch that was nothing short of a feast. Fresh fruits, vibrant vegetables, and delectable cakes awaited us, a perfect reward for our morning’s efforts. As we dined, the stories of our hike were shared, laughter echoing through the dining area.

Wilmer’s attentiveness didn’t end with the hike. He ensured we had everything we needed, even providing extra towels just in case. His dedication to our group’s comfort was evident, and it was clear that he took pride in making our experience memorable.

The afternoon was spent in the mineral-rich hot springs, a sanctuary of relaxation. Surrounded by gardens and waterfalls, the naturally heated Jacuzzis were a balm for our tired muscles. The warmth of the water and the serene environment provided a perfect contrast to the morning’s adventure, allowing us to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences.

A Memorable Conclusion

As the day drew to a close, we reluctantly prepared to leave the tranquility of the hot springs. It was then that we realized my nephew had left his Fitbit watch in the van. A quick call to Wilmer, and he assured us it would be found. True to his word, the watch was located and returned to us at the resort, a testament to the care and professionalism that defined our entire excursion.

Reflecting on the day, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique adventure. The Arenal Volcano Hiking Trail Observatory & Hot Spring was a reminder of the beauty and diversity that Costa Rica has to offer. For a surfer like me, always in search of the next wave, it was a chance to connect with the land in a new and meaningful way. If you find yourself in Santa Cruz, I highly recommend taking the time to explore this incredible destination. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after the journey ends.
