- Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - A fascinating visit to St. Francis Basilica featuring early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, along with the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
After Saint Francis passed away in 1226, the friars constructed several small huts around the Porziuncola. By 1230, a refectory and some adjacent buildings were added. Over time, small porticoes and accommodations for the friars were built around the Porziuncola. Foundations of these structures were uncovered during excavations beneath the current basilica’s floor between 1967 and 1969.
As large numbers of pilgrims flocked to Assisi for the “Pardon of Assisi,” the small space of the Porziuncola became insufficient to accommodate them all. This led to the necessity of building a church that incorporated the Porziuncola. The surrounding buildings were demolished by order of Pope Pius V (1566-1572), except for the Chapel of the Transito, where St. Francis died. Construction of the basilica began on 25 March 1569.
