Into the Heart of the Sierra Nevada
As the sun rose over Santa Marta, I found myself eagerly anticipating the adventure that lay ahead. The Lost City Trek had been on my radar for quite some time, and despite the mixed reviews, my curiosity and passion for exploring untouched landscapes and indigenous cultures propelled me forward. The journey began with a rugged 4x4 ride to the Mamey region, where the real adventure would commence.
The first day was a gentle introduction to the lush, vibrant world of the Sierra Nevada. The path was lined with towering trees and the air was filled with the symphony of the jungle. As we trekked deeper, the landscape unfolded like a living tapestry, revealing indigenous villages where children played alongside chickens and piglets. The sight of these communities, living in harmony with nature, was a poignant reminder of the delicate balance we must strive to protect.
The Journey to the Lost City
The second day was a test of endurance and spirit. The trail wound through the Buritaca river valley, a place where the jungle’s raw beauty was on full display. Our guide, Cesar, and translator, Izzy, enriched the experience with their profound knowledge of the Kogui people and the history of the Lost City. Their stories painted vivid pictures of the past, making the ancient stones and pathways come alive.
The climb to the Lost City was a challenge, but each step was a step back in time. As we ascended the 1,200 steps built by the Tayronas, I felt a deep connection to the land and its history. The Lost City itself was a breathtaking reward, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of its creators. Standing amidst the ruins, I was filled with a sense of awe and responsibility to preserve such treasures for future generations.
A Journey of Reflection and Renewal
The final days of the trek were a time for reflection. The return journey offered moments of tranquility as we cooled off in the crystal-clear streams and waterfalls. The camps, with their comfortable beds and mosquito nets, provided a welcome respite after long days of hiking. Our chef, Poyito, ensured we were well-fed with delicious meals that fueled our bodies and spirits.
As I made my way back to Santa Marta, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the experience. The trek had not only been a physical journey but a spiritual one, deepening my appreciation for the natural world and the cultures that inhabit it. The Lost City Trek is more than just a hike; it’s a call to action to protect and cherish the wonders of our planet. Lost City Trek
