Unveiling Santander: A Family Adventure Through Time

Eager to explore Santander’s rich history with my kids, I booked the Santander Walking Tour. Join us as we uncover the city’s hidden gems and enjoy a family-friendly adventure.

Discovering Santander’s Hidden Treasures

As a travel writer and a mother of three, I am always on the lookout for family-friendly adventures that are both educational and fun. Our recent trip to Santander, Spain, was no exception. We embarked on the Santander Walking Tour and were delighted by the historic gems we uncovered along the way.

Our journey began at the Jardines de Pereda, a lush green space that immediately captured the kids’ attention. The gardens are not only a beautiful spot to relax but also a gateway to Santander’s rich history. We marveled at the monument to José Mª Pereda and took in the stunning views of the bay. The Centro Botín, an internationally renowned art center, was a highlight for us. Its modern architecture juxtaposed against the historical backdrop of Santander was a sight to behold.

The guide was fantastic, engaging the children with stories about the city’s past, including the devastating fire that reshaped Santander. This narrative added a layer of depth to our exploration, making it more than just a walk through the city. It was a journey through time, and the kids were fascinated by the tales of resilience and rebuilding.

A Walk Through History

Our next stop was the Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción. Standing in Plaza de la Asunción, we had a privileged view of this magnificent structure. The guide explained the architectural significance of the cathedral and its role in the city’s history. The children were particularly intrigued by the church of Cristo, which is part of the cathedral complex.

As we continued our walk, we passed the Santander City Council and the Mercado de la Esperanza. The eclectic architecture of the Town Hall was a visual treat, and the market offered a glimpse into the local culture. We took a moment to explore the stalls, where the kids were thrilled to see the variety of fresh produce and local delicacies.

Walking along Juan de Herrera Street, we admired the façade of the Church of “La Compañía” before arriving at Plaza Porticada. This square, with its official buildings and historical significance, was a perfect spot for a family photo. The guide shared stories of the Santander International Festival, which once took place here, adding another layer of history to our tour.

Ending on a High Note

Our tour concluded at Plaza de Pombo, a bustling area filled with life and energy. We passed by the old Banco Mercantil and the Mercado del Este, a gastronomic hub that tempted us with its aromas. The kids were eager to try some local treats, and we indulged in a few snacks before heading back.

The Santander Walking Tour was a perfect blend of education and entertainment, making it an ideal choice for families. The flexibility of the tour allowed us to tailor the experience to our interests, ensuring that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, was engaged and entertained.

For families planning a trip to Santander, this walking tour is a must-do. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the city’s history and culture in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for all ages. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a fun day out with the kids, this tour has something for everyone.
