• Santarem - The capital of Portuguese Gothic architecture, Santarem was founded by the Romans in the first century B.C., reaching its height of prosperity during the domain of the Moors. It was conquered by the first king of Portugal, Afonso I in 1147 and became the regional capital of the province of Ribatejo. We will visit the Church of Graça (13th century Gothic) where we can find the tomb of the great Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil.

This journey takes the route of the enigmatic Knights Templar, a military-religious group renowned for their hidden treasures, including the Holy Grail itself.

We commence our trip in Santarem, affectionately known as the Gothic city, thanks to its abundance of Gothic era monuments.

Following this, we journey to the upper reaches of the Tagus River, crossing by boat to Almourol Castle. This fascinating castle, located on a tiny island within the river, was constructed by the Knights Templar and is among Portugal’s most engaging.

We then travel the Templar Order’s route to Tomar, a city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here on the edges of the Nabão River, we explore the bewitching historical center and the Convent of Christ, the magnificent residence of this outstanding religious and military group, with its eight cloisters.
