Santo Domingo - We took the tour to see the history and culture of Santo Domingo. This was well worth the money to learn about the history of the island and the people. We learned the truth about Christopher Columbus and some other figures like Sir Francis Drake. Nacho was our hilarious informative tour guide who was not afraid of telling it like it is. Frandy was our driver that was not afraid of the crazy driving in the city. We learned a lot and had a great day. There was some shopping offered but the tour guide did not push for sales.

Get to know Santo Domingo and its history - I really liked Mr. Miguel's guide and Mr. Enrique's driving. It is a good tour to learn about the history of the island and Christopher Columbus.

History and Culture of DR and Santo Domingo - Tour guide: Darius Driver: Rene Our tour guide, Darius, was excellent and knowledgeable, I was impressed with how many languages he can speak as well as knowing the history and culture of Santo Domingo and Dominican Republic. I found it very entertaining and learned a lot. The pacing was pretty good to keep the large group of people moving as well as keeping to schedule. There was a lot to see and do, including time for a nice local lunch buffet at a historical restaurant with really good food. Taking pictures had to be done a little quickly, but not too fast, so if you're the type of person who needs a lot of time to hang around and take lots of pictures, then I wouldn't recommend a tour guide, but we still got some amazing pictures. The commute to and from our resort to the city was somewhat long, but that's to be expected with the distance and picking up from other resorts. Our driver, Rene was a very good driver and got us to our destination and back safely. All around, I'd recommend this tour guide trip if you're in the Dominican Republic, and hopefully you'll get Darius as your tour guide and Rene as your driver.

Too much time on the road / in the bus for me but tour was as described… - Firstly, let me start by saying I despise larger group tours and don’t do them for that reason but as a solo female traveller I figured this one would be a safe / easy way to see part of Santo Domingo. So, I broke my own rule on this occasion. The best thing was the guide. He is great, definitely knowledgeable with a sense of humour so in my opinion he absolutely saved the day. Although, I only walked 5300 steps the entire day before being back on the bus after being in the colonial zone, visiting two museums, and having buffet lunch and shops. I felt like we spent a lot of time waiting around. There was some viewing of key buildings when driving past, not getting off the bus. It was just over 4 hours in Santo Domingo all in, plus 6.5 hours from and back to the hotel for me so a lot of sitting on the bus. Was it worth it? The tour was pretty much as described (hence the 4 stars) but the journey definitely was long with pick ups, getting on another bus, waiting for more people etc. so personally I’m inclined to say no. I like to explore differently and walk around, see more local vibes, and take in a place that way. I’m European so when I visit a city I love to clock up 20-30k steps in a day. In the heat here obviously that’s not possible and not helped by a larger group either, but I expected to walk more and see the famous architecture not just being confined to the colonial zone and souvenir shops. We didn’t really have opportunities for pictures plus there was restoration work in the colonial zone and cars blocking potential good photo opportunities. If you want a “light” tour, sitting around lots and in the bus, a good history lesson and museums then this is perfect for you. If you’re like me, take it for what it is (I broke my own “no big group tour” rule, remember) or just do your own thing.

It's not worth it - The excursion itself lasts 5 hours. Plus the time it takes you, three hours there and three hours back, thus adding up to the 11 hours that they sell you for the excursion. We only saw two “museums” (royal house with three or four ancient elements, everything else very basic and the Cathedral) a buffet lunch and rides on the bus to see the government house and some other place, that is… they take care of take you to two different businesses to buy (needless to say, nothing that I haven't seen sold on the beach) oh and I almost forgot, THEY PUT YOU IN A 4D CINEMA to watch a few minutes of an animation about the conquest. LOUSY. The guide does magic by narrating and telling the story, but the excursion is NOT WORTH what they charge. Don't waste your time.

Don’t waste your time or money. - There were no memorable moments. The cathedral was closed and no other stops were of any interest. The guide was very friendly and apologetic.
