Great driver but tour short on history - The ride from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo is long, but Maximo was an outstanding driver and pointed out the sights of interest along the way. The “private” tour was in fact a group tour of around 10-12 (not great, particularly when also trying to socially distance). If you’re looking to know of important periods and figures in Santo Domingo’s history or the architecture of the Zona Colonial, you’d be better off reading a book; I’ve been on Viator trips in a few countries, and the tour guides are generally far more informative and more proficient in language than on this tour. That alone drops me to 4/5, and being routed to three different souvenir shops drops my rating down to 3/5.

Overall a good experience - Things we enjoyed about this tour: 1/our driver, Maximo, who drove us 2 1/2 hours from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo, was a very good driver, knew the area very well and pointed out important sites of interest along the way. I am learning Spanish, and he was very patient with my efforts to speak Spanish. 2/overall, getting out of the cocoon of Punta Cana and seeing other cities in DR is worth it. 3/Santo Domingo has a rich history, and it is worth it to spend time there with a guide who knows his or her way around. Our guide did a pretty good job of showing us important historical buildings in Santo Domingo. He is also a local there so knew many people. What could be improved/what we did not like: 1/it's a long day! Can't do anything about that, but you spend a lot of time in the vehicle getting there, 2/we paid for a private tour. The drive was private (just our party of two and the driver), but we were merged with a larger, non private tour once we arrived in Santo Domingo. We had to listen to the guide give the info in several different languages to all the participants, and I think we got less info about Santo Domingo/less of a tour than we would have gotten if it had been truly a private tour. On that point, I don't recommend paying all the extra money for a private tour when you do not, in fact, get a private tour. 3/we were taken to three stores, two if which sold the standard trinkets and jewelry-pretty much the same touristy style trinkets.
