Showa Shinzan Kumabokujo - On December 28, 1943, a significant earthquake near Mt. Usu, Lake Toya, led to volcanic eruptions, causing the ground to rise rapidly and form a towering mountain. By September 10, 1945, there were 17 notable volcanic activities over two years. This new volcanic mountain, standing at 398 meters, was designated a special natural monument in 1957 and named Showa Shinzan. It remains an evolving ‘new mountain,’ with white smoke continuously emerging from its reddish-brown slopes.

Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch - Situated near the entrance to the Showa Shinzan Ropeway, the Bear Ranch houses over 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears, the largest wild mammals in Hokkaido. Visitors can feed the bears, who stand and wave endearingly when they see food. They are known for their innocence and charm. The horse oil here is reputedly very effective. Admission is 850 yen for adults (junior high school students and above) and 500 yen for children (6 years and above).

It measures about 10 kilometers in diameter, nearly circular, covering an area of 70.72 square kilometers, with a circumference of 50 kilometers. The lake’s deepest point is 180.0 meters, with an average depth of 117.0 meters and a water storage capacity of 8.19 cubic kilometers. It is situated 84 meters above sea level and is the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan.

The Lake Toya Silo Observation Deck offers the best panoramic views of Lake Toya. From this vantage point, one can see the surrounding natural beauty, including Lake Island, Mount Yotei, Showa Shinzan, and Mount Usu.
- Otaru Snow Light Path - During the lighting period, visit the Otaru Snow Lantern Road (approximately ten days in early February each year, lighting from 17:00-21:00). Each winter, around February, Otaru in the north embraces the snowy season. Glass floats, once used with fishing nets, drift on the Otaru canal. Candles inside these floats illuminate the canal’s mirror-like water, creating a stunning and romantic winter scene in Otaru.
