The first stop is the Sapporo Clock Tower, known as Tokedai in Japanese. It is the oldest clock tower in Japan, featuring an American design and is one of the few remaining western-style buildings in Sapporo. It stands as a true symbol of the city. A unique feature of the tower is its clock, which operates solely through the power of gravity. Visitors will explore the charming museum on the first floor before heading to the second floor to see the clock’s inner workings and learn how gravity keeps time.
- Sapporo TV Tower - Next, the tour proceeds to the nearby Sapporo TV Tower, constructed in 1957 and standing at 147.2 meters tall. Designed by Tachu Naito, a renowned Japanese architect also known for the Tokyo Tower, the tower offers a top observation deck with breathtaking 360-degree views of Sapporo. The guide will point out various landmarks from the deck and provide information about each location.
- Nijo Market - The itinerary continues with a visit to the 2jo Fish Market, a hub for the freshest seafood on the entire Island of Hokkaido. The vast selection of seafood is impressive and sure to satisfy any seafood lover’s palate. Lunch will be enjoyed at one of the cozy stall-type restaurants within the market.
- Sapporo City Museum - After lunch, a brisk 20-minute walk through Odori Park leads to The Old Court of Appeals Building, now known as The Sapporo City Museum. This remarkable building, located at the western end of Odori Park, was built in 1926 from porous-tuff stone to serve as Sapporo’s High Court. Inside, visitors will find galleries with exhibitions on local history, including a fascinating “mocked” exhibition of a Criminal Courtroom from the Appeals Court era. Visitors can borrow legal uniforms and take photos inside the courtroom. Above the main entrance is a blindfolded statue of the Goddess of Law, symbolizing equality before the law regardless of wealth or power. This is a unique experience worth trying!
- Tanukikoji Shopping Street - This historic shopping arcade in Hokkaido spans 7 blocks and features over 200 stores and eateries. Here, the guide will provide “free time” for guests to explore independently. Visitors can window shop and find numerous souvenirs for themselves and their families. At the designated time and place, the group will reconvene with the guide and proceed to Sapporo’s Entertainment District for sake tasting.
- Cocono Susukino - The tour concludes in Susukino, Sapporo’s Entertainment District, with a Japanese Sake Tasting at Cocono Susukino. While most sake will be from Hokkaido, there will be a variety from across Japan. Guests can sample different “shots of sake” from several bottles. The guide will offer brief explanations of the different types of sake and their regions of origin. This is a must for sake enthusiasts. Please note, this event is only for those who enjoy sake and drinking, and participants must be 20 years of age or older.
