The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia officially classified the slaughter in Srebrenica as genocide. Despite Potočari, a nearby locale being designated as a safe haven by the Dutch UN division, it was overwhelmed by Bosnian Serb forces who proceeded to massacre over 8000 Bosniaks. Video clips from that era, which are played at the Memorial Center, depict the executions. The victims were dumped into mass graves, and till date, numerous victims remain undiscovered or unidentified. The Memorial was inaugurated officially by former US President Bill Clinton in September 2003. In March of the same year, the first batch of 600 victims were identified.
