The journey from Sarajevo to Srebrenica takes roughly 2.5 hours. The agenda includes a visit to the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the city of Srebrenica. The Srebrenica genocide refers to the mass murder that took place in July 1995. In this horrific event, over 8000 Bosniaks, predominantly males, but including women and children from the Srebrenica vicinity fell victim. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia officially classified the slaughter in Srebrenica as genocide. Despite Potočari, a nearby locale being designated as a safe haven by the Dutch UN division, it was overwhelmed by Bosnian Serb forces who proceeded to massacre over 8000 Bosniaks. Video clips from that era, which are played at the Memorial Center, depict the executions. The victims were dumped into mass graves, and till date, numerous victims remain undiscovered or unidentified. The Memorial was inaugurated officially by former US President Bill Clinton in September 2003. In March of the same year, the first batch of 600 victims were identified.
