The first mention of the area comes from Bela IV of Hungary in 1244. Travnik was among several fortified towns in the region, with its fortress Kaštel evolving into today’s old town sector. The city itself is first noted by the Ottomans during their conquest of nearby Jajce.
- Sarena Dzamija - The Sarena Dzamija (Multi-Colored Mosque), built in 1757, is hard to miss. Known for its vibrant colors and unique, intricate artistic details on the exterior walls, along with its carved wood, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans. It is also the only mosque in the country believed to house hairs of the prophet. The mosque features unusual flower motifs painted on the outside and is one of only two mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina where the prayer room is on the first floor, with the ground floor used for business activities.
- Tvrdava Stari grad - Old Fort is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved medieval fortified structures in Bosnia, showcasing characteristics from various historical periods. There are no known records of the exact year, duration of construction, or the builder. Historians generally agree that the castle was built in the late 14th or early 15th century. Based on construction style and other evidence, it is believed that King Tvrtko II Kotromanić was the original builder, though King Stjepan Dabiša is also mentioned as a possible builder.
- Fortress of Jajce - The fortress of Jajce is situated above the town at an altitude of 470 meters, within the medieval city complex dating back to the 13th century. The fortress, built over several centuries, encloses the architectural remains of a mid-15th century castle. On the southwestern side of the fortress is a portal featuring the royal coat of arms, dating back to the era of Tvrtko II and King Stjepan Tomasevic, who relocated the royal court to Jajce in 1421.
- Pliva Waterfall - Standing 17 meters tall, the Pliva waterfall is one of Jajce’s most prominent landmarks. This natural wonder is located in the heart of the town and is recognized as one of the twelve most beautiful waterfalls in the world. It is also the only waterfall globally that forms an estuary, merging the Pliva River with the Vrbas River. Whether viewed from below or above, the Pliva waterfall offers a breathtaking sight!
- Pliva Lakes - Just a few kilometers from Jajce lie the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, which provide numerous recreational activities such as fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, volleyball, biking, and walking. Public barbecue facilities are also available along the lakeside for picnics.
- Mlincici - Although no longer used for milling, the Pliva Lakes watermills attract tourists from the nearby giant waterfall in town. While the waterfall is impressive with its dramatic 65-foot drop, the quaint shingled watermills evoke a sense of local folklore, as if they might be home to trolls with dragons hitched nearby.
