Crossing Borders and New Horizons

The sun had barely begun to rise when I found myself being whisked away from the Hotel Riu Guanacaste, the salty breeze of the Pacific still lingering in the air. As a seasoned traveler and surfer, the idea of crossing into Nicaragua for a day of exploration was too tempting to resist. The journey began with a smooth ride to the border, where our guide effortlessly navigated the formalities, leaving us free to soak in the anticipation of the adventure ahead.

Once across the border, we were greeted with a hearty breakfast that set the tone for the day. The air was filled with the promise of discovery, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement akin to catching the perfect wave. Our first stop was the Mirador de Catarina, a viewpoint that offered a breathtaking panorama of the dormant volcano, Granada, and the vast expanse of Lake Nicaragua. Standing there, I felt a connection to the land, much like the bond I share with the ocean.

A Tapestry of Culture and Nature

The journey continued to the bustling Mercado de Artesanias de Masaya, where the vibrant colors and intricate crafts spoke volumes of Nicaragua’s rich cultural tapestry. As I wandered through the market, I was reminded of the diverse communities I’ve encountered in my travels, each with its own unique story to tell. The Museo del Parque Volcan De Masaya was next, where the rumbling of the inactive volcano served as a reminder of nature’s raw power.

Our guide led us to the Catedral Metropolitana Inmaculada Concepcion de Maria, a stunning example of colonial architecture. Climbing to the roof, I was rewarded with a panoramic view of Granada, the Mombacho volcano, and the shimmering islets of Lake Nicaragua. It was a moment of pure serenity, akin to the calm before a perfect surf session. Lunch in Granada was a delightful affair, with flavors that danced on the palate, much like the waves I chase.

As the day began to wind down, we embarked on a boat ride across Lake Nicaragua to explore the Isletas de Granada. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the sunsets I’ve witnessed from my surfboard. Our guide stopped at Monkey Island, where playful primates added a touch of whimsy to the experience.

The return journey to Costa Rica was filled with reflections of the day’s adventures. The sights, sounds, and flavors of Nicaragua had left an indelible mark, much like the perfect wave etched in memory. As we crossed back into Costa Rica, I felt a renewed sense of wanderlust, eager to explore more of Central America’s hidden gems.
