This was the original tour by Shannon Scott from the 1990s that started it all! Colonial Park Cemetery is the largest story-filled graveyard in the entire Historic District. It is the oldest piece of city land available to visit, featuring materials much older than the surrounding Victorian City. During Savannah’s colonial era, this was the site for every town meeting, picnic, wedding, duel, and public execution. Eventually, it became the final resting place for General Nathanael Greene, two signers of The Declaration of Independence, merchants, priests, paupers, soldiers, and nearly every individual who contributed their blood, sweat, and tears to the early colony and later nation. Let us not forget how Yellow Fever transformed it into a mass grave, leading to its permanent closure in 1853. The tour also covers discussions on the Root Doctor culture ritualism, The Old City Jail, Conrad Aiken Birthplace, Dueling Grounds, all enhanced with visual images to enrich the experience.
