In 1832, Crown Prince Maximilian, who later became the father of King Ludwig II, purchased the castle. It was completely rebuilt over a period of five years. The family used it as a summer retreat and hunting lodge.

After his father’s passing, King Ludwig II inherited the castle and spent much of his time there.
