Highlights
  • Golden Gardens Park - On the way out of the marina, enjoy the view of more than 1,800 yachts as we then pass by Seattle’s favorite saltwater park Golden Gardens as we set sail, heading west across Puget Sound.
  • Discovery Park - To the south, we will sail past Discovery Park with its historic West Point Lighthouse, which has protected ships from shoal waters while entering Seattle since 1881.
  • Mt. Rainier - On clear days you should have a spectacular view of Mount Rainier, considered one of the most beautiful mountains in the world.
  • Mount Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest - On a clear day, to the north, enjoy the view of Mount Baker, the state’s second highest mountain. It’s called a “Two Mountain Day” when you can see Mount Baker to the north and Mount Rainier to the south while sailing across Puget Sound.
  • Olympic National Park - As we sail west, across the sound we will be aimed directly at the magnificent Olympic Mountains, the heart of Olympic National Park. For sunset sails, the mountains make for stunning sunsets. As the sun sets behind them it illuminates the mountain range and any wispy clouds above.

Additional Information

Experience the magic of being carried by the wind, just as Peter Puget was when he mapped these waters back in 1792. From Seattle’s Shilshole Bay Marina we sail west across Puget Sound toward the magnificent Olympic Mountains. Along the way we will watch for orcas, schools of our local porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, great blue herons, and other wildlife. On the Sunset Cruise, we’ll enjoy the light show as the sun drops behind the well-named Mount Olympus and other peaks in the Olympic Range and illuminates feathery horizon clouds into glorious colors.

Captain Grant, who holds a 100-ton Master of Inland Waters License from the U.S. Coast Guard, is dedicated to sharing the joy of being on the water with others. A former reporter for the Seattle Times, former Science and Medical writer for the Associated Press, and author of four books (one of which was named one of the year’s 10 Best nonfiction books by the American Library Association) Grant is a natural story teller.

Shilshole Bay Marina

Highly recommend! - My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed taking this sailboat cruise around the Puget. We saw a bunch of dolphins, seals, and jellyfish. There were even two cruise ships that left Seattle, which were great to see how big those ships are. Grant was a great captain and very friendly and laidback. He answered all of our questions and also enjoyed the peacefulness of being out on the water. Highly recommend, you will enjoy this trip!

Serenity on the Puget Sound - Captain Grant welcomed us aboard “Sparkles” and guided us through the Puget Sound where we saw Mt. Rainer, the local old school light house, abundant natural beauty and numerous dolphins and seals. Small group. Each of us took the helm and steered. An afternoon of serenity at its finest.

Our day was hazy and cool... - Our day was hazy and cool but I'm not sure if it could have been any better. The Olympic Mtns were steeped in clouds and mist which gave them a magical aurora. When the sun set behind them the color radiated though the clouds lighting up the sky making the light on the water sparkle.

Magical Puget Sound - As soon as Grant welcomed us, we knew we were going to have a good time. The spectacular sky and water changed every few minutes including most dramatic colors as the sun set. Grant's deep knowledge of sailing, the Seattle area, the water plus his general charm created an atmosphere I was sad to see end. I would love to do it again and share it with. more friends. Best way to experience the Pacific Northwest.

A True Joy! - What a wonderful experience! Grant is so kind, knowledgeable and helpful with every aspect of this trip and makes the whole adventure so enjoyable and fun. The water was so calm and peaceful as we sailed by seals and seagulls into the sunset. We all felt so relaxed and revived after our time on the water watching the sunset and seeing The Cascade Mountains around us. A 10 out of 10 for me!

Fun and Relaxing - My husband and I really enjoyed our sailing adventure with Grant. It was overcast and calm so it was easy to spot salmon and dolphins on the water. We saw dozens of seals by the rocks near the marina, too. Grant was a terrific guide and host for the afternoon. We loved being out on the water with him!
