Highlights
  • Cathedral of Segovia - Explore the final masterpiece of Gothic architecture with this entry pass. Access is via the north cross-wing. Its interior, bathed in light from Flemish stained-glass windows of the 16th century, presents a spacious, minimalist aesthetic, featuring a prominent Gothic choir from the 15th century, which is older than the cathedral itself, situated at its heart. Opposite the choir at the eastern end stands the main altar, adorned with a 1700s altarpiece crafted by Sabatini.

Encircling the sanctuary and apse are over 20 chapels. The third chapel to the right upon entering (Capilla de San Cosme y San Damian) showcases a wooden sculpture depicting the mourning of Christ by Gregorio Fernández, a Baroque artist of the 1600s.

The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, a creation of the exuberant Churriguera, is adorned with stained-glass windows, intricately detailed choir seating, and paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a retable illustrating Christ’s entombment by Juan de Juni.

Facing the entrance on the opposite side, the south cross-wing leads to a door that opens into the late-Gothic cloister, predating the cathedral. This cloister, along with its ornate entrance, was relocated from the previous cathedral and is the handiwork of architect Juan Guas.

Directly beneath the cloister’s floor lie the burial sites of Juan and Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón; their resting place within a space designed by Guas is fitting, as the trio were pivotal figures in the final era of Spain’s Gothic architectural period.

Adjacent to the cloister is a modest museum of ecclesiastical art, partially set within the upper-level chapter house, featuring a white-and-gold ceiling from the 17th century, a later instance of Mudéjar artesonado craftsmanship. The museum’s collection includes jewelry, paintings, and an assortment of valuable ancient manuscripts.

Additional Information

The Segovia Cathedral, Spain’s last constructed Gothic cathedral, majestically adorns the historical Plaza Mayor in Segovia. It marks the location where Isabella I was crowned as the Queen of Castile. Often referred to as ‘la dama de las catedrales’, this cathedral fuses a distinctively Gothic exterior with a strikingly unadorned interior, and houses a rich collection of treasures.

It is a wonder - Honestly, one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have visited. Everything is magnificent, the detail has been refined. We stayed there for almost 2 hours. A drawback: no audio guide and the downloadable app is only available in an old version. Damage...

Incredible views from the bell tower - The guided tour of the bell towers offers incredible views of the Segovia landscape. I’ve climbed towers in multiple countries and the views are almost always obstructed or only from small window making it impossible to get a good picture, but that’s not at all the case with the bell tower. The audio guide for English was great and had just enough information to share the interesting history of the cathedral without becoming boring. The inside and exterior of the cathedral was also beautiful!

The Lady of the Cathedrals - It's impressive, it's a mix of styles. Very pretty, worth your visit. Buying your ticket online saves queues and makes going up the tower mandatory. It is at dusk, spectacular views, it is guided and our guide, Julia, is a marvel out of ten, not twenty. There are many steps and they are done in several stops. Highly Recommended

A ver nice surprise - We enjoyed our visit to the Catedral de Segovia a lot. The building is beautiful and impressive inside and there are many things to see. In particular I would like to underline the Pinacoteca, such a beautiful and well kept collection, also in magnificent display, that provides a view of Castilian painting and the influences from other countries on it.

A worthwhile visit - Even though we had the tickets on hand, we still had to queue at the ticketing booth to get the QR code validated. Despite that, we enjoyed exploring the cathedral at our own pace.

Shame for not seeing the cathedral - We were not able to see the cathedral because we arrived at 6:02 p.m. and when we wanted to enter, the person who was at the door was very rude, when we asked if we could enter, he answered no, it is no longer possible, that's what I'm here for. here and he closed the door in our faces.

PAY TO ENTER A TEMPLE AND IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY? - The truth is that I didn't get to enter, since I don't consider it appropriate to charge to enter a temple of any kind. Especially when it comes to a church that is supposed to be our own faith, and in our own country. Many years ago I did visit it, and then I didn't have to pay an entrance fee. I think they only charged for the guide map if you were interested. It seemed inappropriate to me not to be able to visit a temple of your own faith without paying an entrance fee.
