- Thingvellir National Park - Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík. It’s known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland’s parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. On the site are the Þingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault.
- Geysir - The Geysir Geothermal Area, located in southwestern Iceland, is a mesmerizing geothermal field renowned for its active geysers and vibrant hot springs. The area is named after the Great Geysir, one of the world’s earliest known geysers, although it is currently largely dormant. The star attraction is Strokkur, a highly active geyser that erupts approximately every 5-10 minutes, shooting hot water and steam into the air to the delight of onlookers.
- Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss, often referred to as the “Golden Falls,” is one of Iceland’s most iconic and spectacular waterfalls. Situated in the canyon of the Hvítá River in the southwest of the country, Gullfoss is a powerful two-tiered waterfall that plunges dramatically into a rugged, glacier-carved gorge.
- Fridheimar - Friðheimar Tomato Farm and Restaurant is a unique and innovative establishment located in the south of Iceland, near the town of Reykholt. What makes Friðheimar special is its focus on cultivating tomatoes using geothermal energy, creating a sustainable and eco-friendly environment for tomato production.
Visitors to Friðheimar have the opportunity to explore the tomato greenhouse, where rows of tomato plants thrive in the geothermally heated atmosphere. The use of geothermal energy allows for year-round cultivation, and the greenhouse itself becomes a fascinating attraction with its warm and vibrant atmosphere.
- Kerid Crater - Kerið, also known as Kerid or Kerith, is a stunning volcanic crater located in the Grímsnes area of southwestern Iceland. What sets Kerið apart is its vibrant and striking appearance, characterized by its deep, vividly colored crater lake and surrounding red volcanic rock.
The crater was formed around 6,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. Over time, the volcanic cone collapsed, creating the caldera that we see today. What makes Kerið particularly captivating is the contrast between the deep azure-blue color of the lake within the crater and the red, iron-rich volcanic soil that forms the walls of the crater. During different times of the year, the water level in the lake can vary, creating a dynamic visual experience.
