- Thingvellir National Park - The journey to Þingvellir National Park takes approximately 45 minutes. This breathtaking natural marvel is located in southwestern Iceland and is one of the nation’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks. The park boasts a variety of intriguing geological features and is positioned on the boundary of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates converge.
Another remarkable aspect of Þingvellir National Park is Lake Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake. It is a favored destination for fishing, boating, and snorkeling/scuba diving.
Þingvellir National Park is also a site of historical importance, as it hosted Iceland’s first parliament, the Althing. Established in 930 AD, the Althing convened at Þingvellir every summer for over 800 years. Visitors can explore the remnants of the parliament site and delve into Iceland’s rich history and culture.
- Geysir - Geysir is the larger of the two geysers and is the namesake for geysers worldwide. Although Geysir is less active now and erupts infrequently, sometimes going years without an eruption, visitors can still admire the area’s impressive geothermal features, including hot springs and bubbling mud pools.
Strokkur, in contrast, is a much more active geyser, erupting every 5 to 10 minutes and shooting water up to 30 meters into the air. This makes it a popular attraction for tourists eager to witness the spectacle.
The geothermal activity in the area is due to Iceland’s location atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This creates a unique geological environment rich in hot springs, geysers, and other geothermal features.
- Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss, meaning “Golden Falls” in Icelandic, is one of Iceland’s most renowned waterfalls and a popular tourist destination. Situated in southwestern Iceland on the Hvítá river, Gullfoss is part of the famous Golden Circle route.
The waterfall is celebrated for its stunning beauty, with two cascading tiers of water plunging 32 meters into a narrow canyon. When sunlight strikes the waterfall just right, it creates a golden hue, giving the waterfall its name.
A unique aspect of Gullfoss is its history. In the early 20th century, there were plans to harness the waterfall for hydroelectric power, but the landowner, Sigridur Tomasdottir, vehemently opposed the idea and threatened to throw herself into the falls. Her passionate defense led to the waterfall’s preservation, and it is now a protected natural monument.
- Fridheimar - Friðheimar is a family-operated greenhouse farm located in Reykholt, southwest Iceland. The farm specializes in cultivating tomatoes and cucumbers and is renowned for its sustainable farming practices and innovative use of geothermal energy.
Visitors to Friðheimar can enjoy a guided tour of the greenhouse, learning about the farm’s history, farming techniques, and geothermal energy use. The tour includes a visit to the tomato and cucumber greenhouses, where visitors can observe the plants up close and learn about the growing and harvesting process.
A unique feature of Friðheimar is its restaurant, which offers a menu featuring tomatoes and cucumbers grown on the farm. The menu includes dishes such as tomato soup, tomato salad, and cucumber salsa, all made with fresh, locally grown produce. The restaurant also serves a variety of homemade bread, drinks, and desserts. The trip will continue to Hvammsvik hot spring SPA, taking approximately 1.5 hours.
- Hvammsvik Hot Springs - A luxury SPA where guests can relax and enjoy nature, surrounded by fjords and the Atlantic Ocean. Afterward, the journey back to Reykjavik will take about 1 hour.
