A Dive into the Abyss

The moment I arrived at Thingvellir National Park, the anticipation was palpable. The park, a UNESCO heritage site, is a marvel in itself, but my focus was on the Silfra fissure—a place where the Earth literally splits apart. As a marine biologist, the idea of diving between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates was irresistible. The thought of exploring this underwater world, where the Earth is constantly reshaping itself, was exhilarating.

Our guide, James, greeted us with a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye. Originally from the south of England, he exuded a blend of professionalism and humor that immediately put me at ease. He explained the unique geological features of Silfra, including how the plates separate at about 2 cm per year, making each dive a journey through newly formed Earth.
