Silfra Fissure Scuba Diving: Crystal Clear Diving Tour in Thingvellir National Park

Experience the mesmerizing beauty of Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park on a scuba diving tour. Dive between the continental plates and marvel at the crystal clear glacial water.

Duration: 6 hours
Cancellation: 24 hours
Highlights

The Silfra dive tour starts with a morning Reykjavik pick up. From the capital you will head towards Silfra fissure, located in the heart of Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Upon arrival to the park your certified dive master will provide you with a safety briefing and all the necessary diving gear needed for a safe and enjoyable diving experience in the magical fissure of Silfra. Once ready you will start your first dry-suit dive for the day. The current in the fissure is very slow and offers enough time to explore the different lava formations of the rift. The blue color of the water and visibility are unique in the world. Often, the density of the water itself limits the visibility. After the first dive you will warm up a little bit, before its time for your second and last dive for the day which will take you deeper down into the crystal clear fissure.

Your Silfra diving experience concludes with a drop off back to Reykjavik.

  • Minimum age is 18 years old
  • Please note that PADI open water license or comparable is required to be able to participate in this tour. As all dives are performed in a dry suit, it is required to have a dry-suit certification or at least 10 logged drysuit dives to be able to join the tour.
  • Divers must supply their sizes of suit upon booking. It is recommended that your most recent dive has been within the last 2 years before diving in Silfra, as this dive is rated as a challenging dive.
  • Since you will be wearing snorkeling/dive mask to see underwater, there can be nothing in the way of the seal to keep them from filling up with water; That is, you cannot wear glasses underneath the mask; you will have to go without them, so wear contact lenses or bring your own goggles with prescription.
  • Please note: This is a challenging dive where you need to be capable of carrying heavy equipment up to 1300ft (400m).
  • As divers are aware, it is strongly advised to wait 24 hours after diving to fly.

Silfra snorkel - To do the review in sections and with a caveat that I am in the category often described as ‘senior citizen’ and by far the oldest of our group of six: 1. Pickup arrangements from the cruise ship were a bit muddy. There have been some recent port changes so it’s worth getting very specific information beforehand if you’re arriving by boat. 2. The transport with Franklin as driver was a hoot. His driving was fine but the commentary was even better, a bit off the wall and informative at the same time. Top marks. 3. The location at Silfra was very busy with snorkelling and scuba groups meaning that the wait times too get in the water weren’t ideal but hey, it is what it is. And I was a tourist so a part of the problem so shouldn’t complain. 4. The supplied equipment seemed fine. I’m used to wet suits but dry suits are a very different kettle of fish and I thought that if anyone was claustrophobic the whole experience might have been not the best idea. 5. Magd, our guide was personable, efficient and appeared to be a very capable border collie presence for our group. Top marks again. Overall it was a very satisfying experience. The drift itself is unlike anything I’ve been in before and well worth doing. The appearance of a fish was quite a serendipitous event. Overall? No regrets at all. And a great T shirt design if you’re in the ‘been there, done that and I’ve got the T shirt too’ category

Amazing but be aware it’s not for everyone. - This was amazing experience and totally worth it but be aware it’s not for everyone! We booked and loved it surprisingly it wasn’t as cold as I expected and the colours you see are unbelievable. However be aware, the dry suites are heavy cumbersome and the neck is tight. An older couple travelling with their family pulled out because it was too confronting for them and later I found out some younger people pulled out too. Having said all that we loved it!

Stupendous Silfra Snorkeling Tour - Had an unbelievable time on the snorkeling tour. Justin was a great and funny driver who made the drive there enjoyable with fun facts. Dominika was knowledgeable, kind, and made everyone feel safe. The tour was outstanding. Even though the wetsuit experience and acclimating to the water was intense, Dominika got rid of any anxiety so I could enjoy the stunning views of the fissure.

Diving in Silfra - Amazing experience! I went with my mother, all equipment was provided and in perfect condition - I was still dry at the end of the dive. Visibility was brilliant and the fissure is very beautiful. A special thank you to our instructor Veronica - she was brilliant. Very positive, knowledgeable, and upbeat. (I hope your new dry suit comes soon). All in all, great experience, would recommend.

Utterly awesome - What a fantastic experience. Yes, it was very cold and windy but it is Iceland after all! Getting into the kit was easy except for the gloves. You had to put wet, quite tight gloves onto hands that were already so cold, they didn’t really work properly :D. Once we were kitted out, we walked a short way to steps down into the water but not before Weronika (our lovely, informative, super caring guide) took photos. Then into the water which was amazing. The dry suits were very buoyant so we all just bobbed nicely along. Weronika took some more under water pics before we set off. The clarity of the water was unbelievable. Crystal clear. It was truly awesome.

Not as cold as you'd think! - Incredible experience snorkelling through the crystal clear glacier water, the visibility was unlike anything I've ever seen. The water is far too cold to swim in normally so you get all the kit and advice to stay warm, including fleecy undersuit with a dry suit on top, only your face exposed to the elements but very easy to stay warm. Our guide Fede was super friendly and helpful, and told us the history of the fissures we were swimming in. An amazing experience and a must-do if you're visiting Iceland.

Silfra Fissure: Cold but Unique! - This might be one of the most unique things we have ever done! The water is crystal clear, and it's amazing to be drifting between two continents. The air and water are cold, but you are kept dry by a multi-layer wetsuit. The added bonus is that the fissure is located inside Thingvellir National Park that has a tremendous amount of cultural significance for Iceland and natural beauty. We got a chance to see iridescent clouds prior to entering the water. Arctic adventures does a great job picking you up in convenient areas in Reykjavik close to your hotel/hostel and making sure that you get a sense of the history of Iceland during your tours. We had Vjeran as our guide for two excursions, and his passion for Iceland was contagious! I highlight recommend this excursion as well as working with Arctic Adventures for any excursions while in Iceland.

Amazing place to scuba or snorkel. Attention to safety was excellent. - This experience although expensive for a 1 dive day was definitely worth it to scuba dive / snorkel one of the top 5 dive sites in the world. Booked via an agent for Artic Adventures. So in hindsight it may pay to look around / book directly. Also, I needed a bus stop 1 pick up and there wasn’t an option to do this on this booking site, but it can obviously be done Our guides for the day were DM Dominica and Krisztian. Both fabulous at sizing you up and making the dive fun, safe and enjoyable. It was excellent to see the attention to safety as there was top cover, O2 and an emergency kit bought to the waters edge. Unfortunately my suit had a big leak so although I was warm enough… I was cold after 35 mins. However, they had a warm van for changing in and plenty of hot chocolate and biscuits post dive. Had I known in advance both the divers and snorkelers almost do the same route my partner would have come with me for a snorkel. The dive is not stunning in the Red Sea / tropical category of vibrant life n colour but diving through the cracked fissures of the earth is incredible and we saw 1 large trout. Visibility was gin clear from filtered glacial waters and must have been at least 40m. Facility wise there are toilets. No changing room and no snack van so come prepared. Would recommend as they seemed to pay good attention to safety and quality of experience. Dominica and Kristezen were both excellent and worked well together.

Superb diving at Silfra! - I can't say enough about how great Arctic Adventures were. Mino our guide was awesome - very experienced, incredibly funny, and he looked after us so well. We felt very safe the entire time, and he was patient with us during what was our first real dive ever (having just qualified). The dive itself was stunning - super clear, and very interesting from a technical standpoint. Would 100% recommend Mino and Arctic Adventures to anyone. We've done other trips with them and they've never been short of excellent. Without a doubt - 5 stars. Chris and Caitlin
