Constructed entirely of marble, it boasted the world’s largest ancient amphitheater with 25,000 seats. Notable sites include the Temple of Nike, the Hadrian Gate, the Library of Celsus (the third largest library of its era), and the renowned Marble and Harbor Streets.
- Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - The House of the Virgin Mary is traditionally believed to be where Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent her final years (37–45 CE) after arriving in Ephesus with St. John.
- Ephesus Terrace Houses - The Terraced Houses, situated on a hill opposite the Hadrian Temple, are referred to as “the houses of the rich” and offer insights into family life during the Roman period. They were constructed following the Hippodamian city plan, with roads intersecting at right angles.
- The Prytaneion - Behind the basilica is the Prytaneion, where religious ceremonies, official receptions, and banquets took place. This 3rd-century B.C. structure, from the reign of Lysimachos, housed the sacred flame symbolizing Ephesus. The complex includes a four-column front, a courtyard with a portico, and a ceremonial hall where the eternal flame was located, marked by red coloring on the floor.
- Fountain of Pollio - Water in Ephesus was supplied from three main sources via aqueducts and distributed through a network of clay pipes to public fountains, where it was freely available. The sources included Kencherios (42 km away), the Marnas stream (15 km), and the Cayster River (20 km). The fountain featured a high arch facing the Temple of Domitian and was adorned with statues, including the Head of Zeus, now in the Ephesus Museum. Some statues were likely salvaged from the Isis Temple for repairs after an earthquake.
- Baths of Varius - The ruins east of the Basilica are from the Varius Baths, dating to the 2nd century A.D. Constructed from cut marble blocks, the baths feature a 40-meter-long corridor with 5th-century mosaics and include three sections: frigidarium (cold), tepidarium (warm), and caldarium (hot). Excavations are still ongoing.
- The Temple of Artemis - The Temple of Artemis, also known as the Temple of Diana, was a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Located in Ephesus, it was one of the seven wonders of the world.
