Semera - Day1: Addis Ababa
On the first day, we will greet you at Semera airport and proceed to the Danakil depression. Our journey begins with an early trip to Lake Afdera, a saline body of water situated at the core of the Danakil Depressions. Here, you might encounter natural hot springs and enjoy a swim in the lake. Subsequently, we will head towards Dodom, located at the foot of Erta Ale. We plan to depart after lunch, around 01:30 PM. Traversing through various small villages dotting the desert landscape, Dodom lies approximately 9.5 kilometers from Erta Ale, requiring about an hour of hiking. We’ll have an early dinner at 17:00. Camels will carry all necessary camping gear and provisions, including sleeping materials and water, to the edge of the volcano. There, we’ll spend the night observing the mesmerizing spectacle of the churning lava. The Danakil depression, featuring Dallol and Erta Ale, is considered one of the most captivating and physically demanding destinations in Ethiopia.

The Danakil is a real venture spot. A decent road of 350km from Semera to Mekele via Afdera has been established, but tracks to Dallol and Do Dom (for Erta Ale) necessitate 4×4 vehicles and navigational proficiency. It is advisable to explore the region with a professional operator, utilizing at least two 4x4s and employing staff who are familiar with the local Afar. Helicopters to the region can be accessed from Mekele. We presently provide tours directly from Semera. A complete tour requires a minimum of two nights, with one night each spent at Hamed Ela and on the Erta Ale rim. For a daytime viewing of the crater and a visit to Lake Afdera, additional nights at Erta Ale are advisable.
