The Journey Begins: From Addis Ababa to Semera

The adventure kicked off with an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. As a seasoned traveler, the anticipation of exploring the Dallol Volcano, known as Earth’s hottest place, had my adrenaline pumping. The flight was smooth, and the view from above was nothing short of spectacular. The vast Ethiopian landscape stretched out beneath us, a patchwork of colors and textures that hinted at the wonders to come.

Upon landing in Semera, we embarked on a seven-hour drive to the tiny village of Hamdela. The journey was long, but the excitement of what lay ahead kept us energized. We stopped for lunch in Afdera, a quaint town where we dined at a local restaurant. The food was simple yet delicious, a perfect fuel for the adventure that awaited us. As we continued our drive, the landscape transformed, becoming more rugged and remote, a testament to the untamed beauty of this region.

After a morning of exploration, we returned to Hamdela for lunch. The midday heat was relentless, and the prospect of a shower was a welcome relief. Water is a precious commodity here, and the locals sell it to travelers in need. Refreshed and recharged, we prepared for the next leg of our journey: the drive to Erta Ale.

Conquering Erta Ale: The Smoky Mountain

The drive to Erta Ale, known as the “smoky mountain” in the Afar language, was an adventure in itself. The rugged terrain tested our endurance, but the promise of witnessing one of Ethiopia’s most alluring natural attractions kept us motivated. Erta Ale is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and a 1 km square caldera at its summit. The scale of this geological wonder is awe-inspiring, and the thought of standing at its edge filled me with a sense of exhilaration.

We arrived at Erta Ale in the late afternoon, just in time to witness the sun setting over the caldera. The view was nothing short of spectacular, the fiery glow of the lava lake contrasting with the darkening sky. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature.

The next morning, we explored the area around Erta Ale, taking in the sights and sounds of this incredible place. We then made our way back to Afdera, where we had the opportunity to see modern salt extraction in action. The nearby hot springs offered a chance to relax and rejuvenate, a perfect end to an unforgettable adventure.
