- Gyeongbokgung Palace - Constructed as the official palace of the Joseon dynasty by Yi Seong-gye, who became King Taejo and established the new regime, Gyeongbokgung Palace is often called the Northern Palace due to its location north of Changdeokgung Palace and Gyeonghuigung Palace. It is considered the most beautiful and largest of the five palaces. Many Joseon kings, including the 2nd King Jeongjong, 4th King Sejong, 6th King Danjong, 7th King Sejo, 9th King Seongjong, 11th King Jungjong, and 13th King Myeongjong, were crowned here. The palace was once destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598) but was later restored under Heungseondaewongun during King Gojong’s reign. The assassination of Empress Myeongseong led to the palace losing its royal function, marking the decline of the Joseon dynasty.
- Bukchon Hanok Village - Nestled among Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to numerous traditional houses, known as hanok, from the Joseon dynasty. The name Bukchon, meaning “northern village,” reflects its position north of Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many hanoks serve as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional Korean culture. As it is a residential area, visitors should be respectful while exploring.
- Insadong - Situated in the city’s heart, Insa-dong is a significant area showcasing traditional goods. The main road is flanked by alleys filled with galleries, traditional restaurants, teahouses, and cafes. The galleries are the core of Insa-dong, with around 100 galleries displaying traditional Korean art, from paintings to sculptures. Notable galleries include Hakgojae Gallery, a folk art hub, and Gana Art Gallery, which supports emerging artists. The teahouses and restaurants, hidden in winding alleys, complement the galleries, creating a treasure hunt-like experience. Insa-dong’s unique shops attract visitors of all ages.
- N Seoul Tower - Namsan Seoul Tower, Korea’s first multipurpose tower, combines a sightseeing observatory with a broadcasting tower. For over 40 years, it has been a prominent Korean landmark and a popular tourist spot. The observatory provides a panoramic city view, making it a favorite among locals and tourists. The Namsan Cable Car, operational since 1962, transports visitors from the mountain’s base to the tower. Shuttle buses from downtown Seoul to the cable car are available for convenience.
- Namsan Cable Car - Offering a sweeping view of downtown Seoul, the Namsan Cable Car has been operational for over 40 years, transporting both tourists and locals to the iconic Namsan Seoul Tower.
- Kwangjang Market - As Korea’s first permanent market, Gwangjang Market remains a bustling tourist attraction. The name Gwangjang means “to gather from afar and keep altogether.” Initially a small trading hub for nearby goods, it has expanded into a large wholesale market offering upholstery, imported goods, groceries, dried fish, traditional items, and more. The food street, linked to the East Gate, North Gate 2, and South Gate 1, is the market’s most popular area, offering a wide variety of menus and is highly recommended for international visitors.
