Beautiful Umbwe Route - We did the Umbwe route back in January 2010 (please ignore the 2019 date - there weren't any later options). We climbed it as a group of 5 family and friends. The Umbwe route is truly beautiful. Each day you pass through a different climatic and ecological zone, so the scenery is always different. The trail for the first 2 days is along one of the volcanic ridges, so you have spectacular views on both sides of the path as you walk. If you are looking for a quieter route than the most popularly advertised routes (generally Machame and Marangu), this one is for you. You generally spend the first two days hiking without seeing anyone else, which for us was fantastic. You join up with the hikers from the other routes at Barranco at the end of the second day. It is, however a challenging route. The first two day are a very steep uphill climb and it does give you less time to acclimatise to the altitude at Barranco (and higher), as you reach Barranco in one day less than the Machame route. The day before summit, however is a lot easier as you only have a half-day hike to Barafu, giving you the full afternoon to rest before beginning the summit walk that night. That being said, all 5 of us reached the summit. The oldest person in our group (55 at the time) did suffer from a bit of altitude sickness but was closely monitored by the guides and summited successfully with no side effects. I would advise you to have your wet-weather gear handy in your day pack, as it rained/hailed/sleeted regularly (at around 2pm) every day. I would strongly recommend the Umbwe route for people who are looking for slightly more of a challenge when climbing Kilimanjaro. This route is tough, but a highly rewarding experience.
