The Izakaya Experience
Izakayas are an essential part of Japanese drinking culture, and no visit to Japan is complete without experiencing one. An Izakaya is often described as a blend of a pub and a restaurant, where friends or coworkers gather to enjoy drinks and food in a lively atmosphere. The best Izakayas are often hidden gems known only to locals. This Tokyo food tour offers the chance to explore these authentic spots with a knowledgeable local guide.
Dishes in Izakaya
The cuisine at an Izakaya is akin to ‘small plates,’ featuring a variety of dishes such as yakitori, sashimi, fried chicken, pickles, and edamame. These dishes are shared among everyone, allowing each person to sample a wide array of flavors, all complemented by a cold drink and engaging conversation.
The Yokocho
Yokocho are among Japan’s best-kept culinary secrets, consisting of narrow alleys filled with tiny bars, restaurants, and cafes. They offer a unique glimpse into Japan’s nightlife, where people from all walks of life gather in cozy bars to share stories with strangers and the bar’s master or mama-san. These bars may not be luxurious, but they serve a variety of delicious Japanese food and drinks, with a friendly clientele and a distinctive atmosphere. Yokocho are scattered throughout Tokyo, offering a nostalgic experience that many tourists might not expect in this bustling city.
Sangenjaya
Sangenjaya, affectionately known as Sancha by locals, derives its name from the three Edo-era tea houses that once stood on the road to old Edo. Just one stop from Shibuya, Sancha is a popular area for Tokyo residents but remains relatively unknown to visitors, often overshadowed by the trendy Shimokitazawa and the bright lights of Shibuya and Shinjuku. This hidden charm is part of its allure.
