In 206 BC, Little Rome was established as the initial Roman settlement outside of Italy. This historic city was founded by the notable general Publius Cornelius Scipio, also known as Scipio the African. Serving as the hometown to two significant Roman emperors, Hadrian and Trajan, this city was a hub of lavish living and ‘simulacra romae’. We’ll embark on a fascinating journey through its age-old streets, guided by an expert who’ll assist us in decoding and understanding the precinct’s entirety. We’ll uncover breathtaking mosaics, the Traianeum, old primary baths, and its renowned amphitheatre - the world’s third largest. Known for hosting iconic gladiator battles, this amphitheatre was also used as a filming location for the well-loved Game of Thrones series. Discovered in the mid-20th century, the city’s preserved Roman theatre still stages theatrical acts and is among Europe’s finest. Following our exploration of this precinct, our journey takes us to the San Isidoro del Campo monastery, a medieval fortress. Our expedition concludes with a visit to a traditional winery for a delightful wine tasting session.
