Exploring Alaska’s Heart: A Crafted Journey from Seward to Anchorage
Drawn by the allure of Alaska’s majestic landscapes and local flavors, I embarked on the Alaska Crafted Tour. This journey from Seward to Anchorage promised not just a transfer, but an unforgettable adventure through the heart of the Last Frontier.
A Journey Through Postcard Alaska
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, I have always been drawn to the open road and the stories it holds. My husband and I, now seasoned RV travelers, decided to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska, a place that had long been on our bucket list. The Alaska Crafted Tour seemed like the perfect way to experience the grandeur of the Last Frontier while indulging in its local flavors.
Our adventure began in the historic port city of Seward, where we were greeted by Bryan, our guide for the day. It was late in the cruise season, and our group was small, just four of us, which made the experience feel intimate and personal. As we set off on the 114-mile journey along the Seward Highway, I was reminded of the road trips of my youth, where every turn revealed a new story and every mile brought us closer to the heart of America.
The drive through the Kenai Peninsula was nothing short of spectacular. The mountains stood tall, their peaks dusted with snow, while pristine lakes mirrored the sky. Bryan, with his wealth of knowledge, shared tales of the region, including the great earthquake that reshaped the land. It was a reminder of nature’s power and the resilience of the people who call this place home.
A Taste of Alaska’s Craft Scene
Our first stop was the Alyeska Resort, where we boarded the aerial tram for a ride to the top of Mount Alyeska. From 2,300 feet above the valley floor, the views were breathtaking, a panorama of the Chugach Mountains that seemed to stretch on forever. Lunch at the Bore Tide Bar and Deli was a delightful affair, with the stunning backdrop making every bite taste even better.
Next, we made our way to the Girdwood Brewing Company, a charming brewery nestled in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness. Founded in 2017, it quickly became a favorite among our group. Jake, our host, was both knowledgeable and welcoming, making us feel like part of the family. The handcrafted beers were a testament to the creativity and passion of Alaskan brewers, each sip a celebration of the local culture.
As we continued our journey, the Turnagain Arm Drive offered some of the most scenic views I have ever encountered. The road hugged the coastline, with the waters of the Cook Inlet glistening in the sunlight. It was a drive that reminded me of the endless highways of the Midwest, where the journey is as much about the road as it is about the destination.
A Perfect Ending in Anchorage
Our final stops were the Anchorage Distillery and the Double Shovel Cider Company. At the distillery, we were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the production process, learning about the Alaskan-grown ingredients that make their spirits so unique. The cocktail we sampled was superb, a perfect blend of flavors that captured the essence of Alaska.
The day concluded at Double Shovel, where we were greeted by a warm, open-air tasting room. The ciders were exquisite, each one offering a different taste of the region. Sitting there, sipping on the finest ciders, I felt a deep connection to the land and its people. It was a fitting end to a journey that had been as much about discovery as it was about reflection.
As we made our way to Anchorage, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared. Bryan’s professionalism and passion for his work were evident in every aspect of the tour. He had not only shown us the beauty of Alaska but had also introduced us to the people who make it so special. This was more than just a transfer; it was a journey through the heart of Alaska, one that I will cherish for years to come.
