It was neglected after Pan Yunduan’s death, restored by new owners, damaged during the Opium War, and reopened in 1961 after extensive repairs.
Nearby, the bustling Yuyuan Market, including the renowned City God Temple (Cheng Huang Miao), offers a variety of traditional Chinese crafts like chopsticks, fans, and pottery, as well as local treats such as steamed buns, crab shell cake, and pork chop with rice cakes. Be sure to negotiate for the best prices.
