People’s Square (Renmin Guang Chang) - The tour guide will meet the group at the hotel at 09:00 a.m. From there, the group will transfer to People’s Square to begin the highlight tour.
Shanghai People’s Square is centrally located in Shanghai, marking the division between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a vibrant area for exploration.
Before 1949, the site of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861 and known as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of People’s Square.
Many attractions surround People’s Square, including the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and Mu’en Church. The group will visit the Shanghai History Museum to explore 6000 years of Shanghai’s civilization. - Shanghai History Museum - Located in the People’s Square area, the Shanghai History Museum is a large museum dedicated to the local history of Shanghai. It houses over a thousand relics and chronicles 6000 years of regional history. For those curious about Old Shanghai, the museum provides answers. It is divided into two sections – Ancient Shanghai and Modern Shanghai, tracing the city’s political, social, economic, and cultural evolution from 4000BC to the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
- Mu’en Church - Situated on Xizang Zhong Lu, amidst department stores across from People’s Square, Mu’en Church was formerly known as Moore Church, named in honor of the generous American donor Moore. Designed by European architect Laszlo Hudec, this new Gothic church features a brick-and-wood structure. It boasts a large lobby, with the central part forming the main body of the church. The hall’s rectangular pillars, balcony balusters, and bema are adorned with artificial stones. Inside, the concrete ribbed vault is visible.
The group will then stroll along Nanjing Road, exploring nearby communities and the thinnest building.
-
Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - Known as the ‘No. 1 commercial street in China’, Nanjing Road has long been a city landmark. Spanning 5.5 kilometers, it features over 600 shops, attracting approximately 1.7 million visitors daily.
The group will ride the Dangdang sightseeing tram, an unforgettable experience on the old-style tram. The slow ride offers views of various stores, both old and new, passing by.
The thinnest building on Ningbo Road, known as the Paper Building (纸片楼), is also a point of interest. Once reported by the British Daily Mail as possibly the world’s flattest and thinnest building, it appears like a piece of paper when viewed diagonally from the front. The old house has four floors and is not entirely thin; it is shaped like a triangular polygon. This unique building still houses many residents.
Based on preferences, the guide will recommend a dining spot, ranging from a small local eatery to an elegant restaurant.
After lunch, the group will transfer to Pudong to explore Shanghai’s financial district and visit Shanghai Tower.
-
Pudong New Area - As a bustling new district, Pudong offers modern attractions, businesses, skyscrapers, and shopping malls, showcasing the latest in entertainment, technology, and fashion.
The group will walk along Lujiazui Ring Bridge, an excellent spot for photographing skyscrapers. - Shanghai Tower - A new Shanghai landmark, the tallest building in the city, standing at 632 meters. The 118th floor features the world’s highest indoor observation deck, known as the ‘Top of Shanghai Observatory’. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibition hall on floor B1 before taking the express elevator to the 118th floor in just 55 seconds, reaching speeds of 18 meters per second. From here, a bird’s-eye view of Shanghai is available. The 119th floor offers time to admire the scenery on both sides of the Huangpu River.
- Riverside Promenade (Bingjiang Da Dao) - The guide will then lead the group around Shanghai Binjiang Avenue, built in 1997 and located on the east bank of the Huangpu River, praised as the new Bund of Pudong. It combines sightseeing, leisure, and relaxation, emphasizing the urban ecological environment and functions. Walking along the broad Binjiang Avenue, overlooking the Bund panorama, and listening to the melodious whistle on the Huangpu River offers a rare peaceful and comfortable experience in the heart of the metropolis.
The group will then transfer to the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum to uncover a lesser-known aspect of Shanghai’s history.
-
Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum - This museum commemorates the Jewish refugees who resided in Shanghai during World War II after fleeing Europe to escape the Holocaust. It features documents, photographs, films, and personal items documenting the lives of over 20,000 Jewish residents of the Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees, also known as the Shanghai Ghetto, during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai.
Important sites from that era include the Jewish Refugees Museum (formerly Ohel Moishe Synagogue), Huoshan Park, and Xiahai Temple. The knowledgeable guide will share insights about the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, modern-day life in the historic neighborhood, and introduce local residents during this fascinating tour. -
Huoshan Park - Located in Hongkou District, near the intersection of Zhoushan Road and Huoshan Road, Huoshan Park covers 3,700 square meters. During World War II, many Jews sought refuge in Shanghai to escape fascist persecution. In 1994, a monument was erected in the park to commemorate Jewish refugees.
Jews in Shanghai often gathered in this park for relaxation. Today, it is open to the public for leisure, with elderly people exercising, making it a pleasant place to visit.
The group will then transfer to the Former French Concession area, stroll along Sinan Road, and visit Sinan Mansions.
- Sinan Mansions - A delightful place for leisure and entertainment, Sinan Road is a renowned French-style street in the Former French Concession of Shanghai. Approximately twenty garden houses line the street, representing nearly all residential styles of early 20th-century Shanghai. The area features boutique hotels, apartment hotels, and enterprise mansions. Additionally, there are various restaurants, bars, coffee houses, tea houses, clubs, convention centers, showrooms, cultural salons, designer shops, and recreational parks. Strolling down this clean and romantic one-way street, shaded by plane trees, offers a sense of tranquility amidst bustling Shanghai.
The group will then explore Tianzifang and visit a local wet market.
- Tianzifang - Once an industrial area, Tianzifang is now a fashion landmark with numerous lanes. Walking through the old alleys reveals the folk houses of early 20th-century Shanghai, with dormer windows, red tiles, and green moss on the walls. Additionally, many restaurants and fashion boutiques are present, making it an ideal spot for enjoying delicious food and shopping.
- Taikang Road - The group will visit Taikang Wet Market, where locals shop for groceries. Shanghai markets offer many ingredients not commonly used outside China, and the guide will explain each item.
Afterwards, the group will enjoy a comfortable transfer back to the hotel, wrapping up their memories and saying goodbye at the hotel.
