People’s Square (Renmin Guang Chang) - The tour guide will meet the group at the hotel at 09:00 a.m. From there, the group will transfer to People’s Square to begin the highlight tour.
Shanghai People’s Square is centrally located in Shanghai and serves as the dividing point between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a vibrant area for exploration.
Before 1949, the area of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861, and known as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of People’s Square.
The tour will include many scenic spots around People’s Square, such as the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Later, the group will visit Shanghai Museum. -
Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) - Situated in the heart of Shanghai at People’s Square, Shanghai Museum is a large museum dedicated to ancient Chinese art. Its design and presentation immerse visitors in artifacts that showcase ancient wisdom and philosophy. The exterior design, featuring a round dome and square base, symbolizes the ancient concept of a round heaven and a square earth.
The museum is divided into eleven galleries and three exhibition halls. The eleven galleries encompass most major categories of Chinese art: Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics, Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities.
Next, the group will stroll along Nanjing Road, exploring nearby communities and the thinnest building.
- Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - Nanjing Road is regarded as the ‘No. 1 commercial street in China’, and has long been a city landmark. Spanning 5.5 kilometers, it features over 600 shops, attracting approximately 1.7 million visitors daily. Here, one can find everything from unique and affordable souvenirs to luxurious world-famous brands. Visitors can also explore the surrounding neighborhoods and the thinnest building.
The thinnest building on Ningbo Road is known as the Paper Building (纸片楼). It was once featured in the British Daily Mail as possibly the world’s flattest and thinnest building. Viewed diagonally from the front, it resembles a piece of paper. The old house has four floors and is not entirely thin; it is shaped like a triangular polygon. This unique and intriguing building still houses many residents.
The group will then walk around Yuyuan Old Street, experiencing the authentic Shanghai lifestyle and visiting a classical garden and Chinese pharmacy.
-
Yuyuan Old Street - Shanghai Old Street, historically known as Miaoqian Dajie, is an old commercial street that combines tourist attractions, shops, entertainment, and cultural exhibits. Its special social appeal and rich commercial history stem from being home to the city’s earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler’s store, wine shop, and tea house. Exploring the old alleys of Shanghai offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the city’s traditional culture and experience the real life of the Shanghainese.
The group will walk along Yuyuan Old Street and visit a classical garden. -
Yu Garden (Yuyuan) - Yu Garden was a private garden of the Pan family during the Ming Dynasty. It was the largest and most prestigious garden of its time in Shanghai upon completion.
Though small in size, Yu Garden contains all the elements of a classical Chinese garden. The pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds, and cloisters each have unique characteristics. The exquisite layout, beautiful scenery, and artistic style of the garden architecture make it one of Shanghai’s highlights.
Visitors can walk to the Zigzag Nine Bend Bridge. In Chinese culture, the number nine symbolizes auspiciousness. Crossing the Bridge is believed to bring good luck. The Bridge leads to Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse, the oldest teahouse in Shanghai. - Suzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum - This historic Chinese pharmacy was established in the Qing Dynasty in 1783. It is one of the four renowned traditional Chinese medicine stores in Shanghai. It retains a very traditional operating and decorating style. The architecture is old and beautiful, offering an excellent place to learn about traditional Chinese Medicine.
At noon, the group will enjoy traditional Chinese dim sum - Xiaolongbao for lunch.
Then, they will admire the western-style architecture around the Former French Concession area.
- Xintiandi - Xintiandi is a tourist attraction that preserves Shanghai’s historical and cultural features while integrating Chinese and Western culture. Xintiandi is divided into northern and southern sections. The south is characterized by modern architecture, while the north features Shikumen old buildings. Comprising Shikumen and modern architectural styles, it has become a popular and fashionable pedestrian street in the city center. It represents the popular and leisurely lifestyle of the city’s new generation. Outdoor cafes, bars, and romantic restaurants are abundant.
- Shikumen Museum, Shanghai - This is an old Shikumen house built in the 1920s that has been preserved and renovated. The museum is modeled after a 1920s household. There are seven main exhibition rooms: the guest room, study room, old people’s room, master room, daughter room, pavilion room, and oven room. The story of a Shikumen family is woven throughout the visit. It showcases the unique Shikumen architectural culture of Shanghai and recreates the living space and lifestyle of Shanghai residents from that era.
- 1933 Old Millfun - 1933 Old Millfun, or 1933 Laochangfang in Chinese, or simply 1933, was originally a slaughterhouse built in 1933 at the intersection of Hongkou Port and Shajing Port, near the Bund. Today, it has been transformed into a hub of creative art precincts and has become a center for Shanghai’s fashion, design, shopping, and entertainment. Visitors can see Lattice Windows, Umbrella Columns, Covered Bridges, Central Atrium, and Sky Theater.
The group will then transfer to Pudong to explore Shanghai’s financial district and visit Jin Mao Tower.
-
Pudong New Area - As a vibrant and bustling district, Pudong offers visitors some of the most modern attractions, businesses, skyscrapers, and shopping malls, all featuring the latest in entertainment, technology, and fashion.
The group will walk along Lujiazui Ring Bridge, an excellent spot for photographing skyscrapers. -
Jin Mao Tower - As the fourth tallest building in Shanghai, following Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower is located in the center of Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone in Pudong. It stands 420.5 meters (almost 1,380 feet) tall and covers an area of 2.3 hectares (5.68 acres). The architect, Adrian D. Smith, ingeniously combined elements of traditional Chinese culture with the latest architectural styles of the time, making it one of China’s best-constructed buildings.
The 88th floor, the highest floor, is reserved for the tower’s observation deck, which can accommodate 1,000 people at a time. From there, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the scenery along the banks of the Huangpu River. If the weather is favorable, there is a chance to witness a spectacular sunset.
Afterwards, the group will enjoy a comfortable transfer back to the hotel, wrapping up their memories and saying goodbye at the hotel.
