- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and boasts the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities worldwide. The museum showcases an extensive array of artifacts from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era.
The building’s architect was chosen through an international competition in 1895, the first of its kind, won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, housing some of the world’s most magnificent ancient masterpieces.
- Nile River - The modern name of the Nile River is derived from the Greek Nelios, but the Egyptians referred to it as Iteru or “River.” The Nile is the longest river in the world, stretching approximately 6,825 km. The Nile River System comprises three main branches – the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara River.
A boat ride on the Nile River between Cairo, the capital of Egypt, and Giza, where the pyramids are located, offers a glimpse into the culture of Egypt.
- Pyramids of Giza - The Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Great Pyramid and the Great Pyramid of Khufu, is an ancient Egyptian pyramid and the largest of the three Pyramids of Giza. It was constructed to honor Khufu, the second king of Egypt’s 4th dynasty, and was completed around 2560 BCE.
The Great Pyramid is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World still standing today. It is considered a marvel due to its immense scale and the incredible precision of its construction. It is believed to be the burial site of Khufu, although only an empty sarcophagus has been discovered inside. Originally, the pyramid stood about 482 feet (147 meters) high, with four equal sides each measuring about 755 feet (230 meters). The massive, stepped sides were once covered with highly polished limestone casing stones. When in place, these stones, each weighing approximately 15 tons and fitted together with remarkable accuracy, would have given the structure a brilliant sheen in the sunlight.
-
Great Sphinx - The 66-foot-tall (20-meter-tall) Sphinx of Giza is an emblem of ancient Egypt and the subject of ongoing debate regarding its meaning, age, and original creator. With a human head and a lion’s body, the Sphinx—one of the world’s largest and oldest statues—is said to symbolize strength, power, and wisdom.
-
Egypt Papyrus Museum - Papyrus, an early form of a book, was first known to be used in Egypt (at least as far back as the First Dynasty), as the papyrus plant was once abundant.
