Self Guided Tour - The staff were a font of knowledge & equipped us with the maps & information needed to complete the self guided tour. No question was too much for the staff to answer & they were very pleasant & very helpful throughout the 3 hours we were there. There is so much to see & information boards are displayed throughout giving you the info needed to appreciate the magnitude of the place. We will certainly be returning again, perhaps for one of the talks or immersive experiences. There are quite a few steps along the way but it was manageable at our own pace. The coffee shop at the end was a very pleasant surprise (excellent coffee) together with a small museum & gift shop.

great place most interesting - Great welcome by staff. we were given a very helpful map and quick advise on using it. Plenty to see in and outside very well organised. We found it interesting and depressing all at once. Not a nice place to be imprisoned.. Lots of steps and stairs Well worth a visit fascinating place

HIDDEN GEM OF IMPORTANT HISTORY - what a great unexpected experience, i booked the tour on short notice, even though i had been to the area many times before, i did not realise the Gem was hidden in the middle of Shepton Mallet. Who knew that this building and operation was steeped in such important history, the tour guide (Jason) was so so knowledgable and he made the tour interactive, by his encouragement to look deeper into the cells and rooms to explore the history back 100s of years. This Tour was a wonderful insight to our country,s history and dates back to the 1600s right through until it closed in 2013. please go and see this iconic experience

A real eye opener - What an amazing place to visit, it has an eerie feeling about it and it's a real eye opener to, what will hopefully remain to be, another world! It's something I never thought I would see but the fascination is there. Very interesting

Well worth a visit. - We went to see the wedding dress exhibition which was excellent and did the self guided tour while we were there. We were disappointed there weren't guided tours available because it was midweek in term time. We managed to find our way around and'escape' on our own. Very interesting morning.

Could be so much better - We found part of the self guided tour interesting yet it’s not always clear which route to take. Some of the information provided was very amateur compared to other visitor attractions/ museums. For example the fake blood stained sheets in one exhibition were very amateurish! There was a lack of consistency & our overwhelming opinion was things could be so much better with a little investment. Would we return again? Unfortunately not. It should we noted that as we left & stood by the entrance we could hear the female staff member swearing like a trooper to her colleague!!!

Not as good as we expected. - Not as good as we were expecting. Much smaller than we'd imagined as well. Would have been much better with more lifelike dummies, more of them and maybe some noises along the way like banging cell doors or shouting from prisoners maybe. Slightly ruined by decorators in and me getting paint all over one hand because I hadn't been told to look out for wet paintwork. Nothing special to be honest.

Not as expected - My husband and I did the self guide tour . We didn’t enjoy it the markings showing the way to go when there was some not very clear. Not a lot of exhibits in some of the rooms. An audio guide explaining where to go and a bit about prison life would’ve been better. Won’t be visiting this again.
