Owaku-dani Valley - Experience the vibrant volcanic activity of Owakudani (about 50 minutes, free time). Owakudani is situated in Hakone City, southeast of Mount Fuji, and is a renowned tourist spot. The crater remains were formed by a volcanic eruption on the northern slope of Mt. Kamiyama at the end of Hakone’s volcanic activity 1,000 years ago. Most of Owakudani’s spring water is toxic, earning it the nickname “Big Hell.” In 1876, it was renamed Owakudani after Emperor Meiji’s visit in 1868.
Visitors can sample Owakudani’s famous delicacy, Black Eggs, at their own expense. The hike from the Nature Research Trail entrance takes about 15 minutes, leading to a small shop called Tamago Tea House, where steam rises. Nearby, the renowned black eggs are cooked on-site. It is said that eating one can extend your lifespan. Black eggs are boiled in the hot spring pool for about 80 minutes, then steamed at 100 degrees.
