Gotokuji is a Buddhist temple, and is widely recognized as the birthplace of the Maneki-neko (beckoning cat). According to legend, the temple’s cat raised its paw to gesture toward a passing samurai, which led to the samurai’s good fortune and the temple’s prosperity. As a result, Gotokuji is home to many Maneki-neko statues, which are believed to bring good luck and fortune.
