A Journey to the Heart of Port Stephens

The Port Stephens Snorkel Tour was a perfect fit, offering an intimate exploration of the stunning islands of Port Stephens with a small group of like-minded adventurers.

Our journey began with a warm welcome from the young and enthusiastic crew, who were not only knowledgeable about the local area but also deeply committed to preserving its natural beauty. Their passion for the environment was infectious, and I felt an immediate connection with them as we set sail towards Cabbage Tree Island.

The boat ride itself was a serene experience, with the gentle waves lapping against the hull and the salty sea breeze invigorating my senses. As we approached the island, the lush greenery of New South Wales’ only coastal rain forest came into view, promising a day of discovery and wonder.

Discovering Cabbage Tree Island

Cabbage Tree Island is a hidden gem, home to Australia’s rarest seabird, Gould’s Petrel, as well as a host of other wildlife including Sea Eagles, Blue Groper, and Australian Fur Seals. Our guide, a local who had grown up exploring these waters, led us on a snorkeling adventure that revealed the vibrant marine life beneath the surface.

The underwater world was a kaleidoscope of colors, with schools of fish darting around coral formations and curious seals playfully swimming alongside us. The highlight of the snorkeling experience was undoubtedly the small boat wreck, a haunting yet beautiful reminder of the ocean’s mysteries.

Above the water, the island’s rain forest offered a tranquil escape, with the sounds of birdsong and the rustle of leaves creating a symphony of nature. It was a reminder of the delicate balance that exists in these ecosystems and the importance of protecting them for future generations.

A Glimpse into History at Tomaree Head

After our time at Cabbage Tree Island, we cruised past Tomaree Head, a place steeped in history and natural beauty. From the sea, we could see the remnants of Fort Tomaree, a World War II site that stands as a testament to the area’s rich past.

The infamous ‘Mrs Murphy’s Crack,’ a giant gorge running through the middle of Tomaree Headland, was a sight to behold. Accessible only by boat, it offered a unique perspective on the landscape and a reminder of the power of nature to shape the world around us.

As we made our way back to Shoal Bay, I reflected on the day’s adventures and the incredible beauty of Port Stephens. This intimate snorkel tour was more than just a day out on the water; it was a journey into the heart of a region that is as rich in history as it is in natural wonders. It reinforced my belief in the importance of sustainable travel and the need to protect these precious environments for future generations.
