Aksu-Zhabagly is Central Asia’s most distinguished and longest-standing nature reserve. Founded in 1926, it was established with the goal of safeguarding threatened wildlife and the reserve’s rich biodiversity. This sanctuary is situated in the foothills of the Western Tien Shan, ranging from 1000 to 4280 meters above sea level. In 2016, it was honored by inclusion in the UNESCO’s World Biosphere Reserves list. The reserve’s tallest point is the Sairam Peak, which stands at 4238 meters.
The name Aksu-Zhabagly derives from the two primary rivers that course through the reserve - the Aksu and the Zhabagly. The Aksu river is the more elongated of the two, stretching over 120 kilometers. During spring, the Aksu River has a blue hue, but it transforms into a milk-like color in the summer. This inspired its name - ‘Ak’ stands for ‘white’, and ‘Su’ for ‘water’. The Aksu canyon, sculpted by the powerful Aksu river, is among the deepest in Central Asia, with depths varying between 300m and 500 meters, and a length of 30 km.
