Basilica Cateriniana Di S. Domenico - Your journey begins at the main entrance of San Domenico church, a significant site for Siena and its residents as it holds the relics of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Italy, and plays a crucial role in the Palio, the renowned medieval horse race.
-
Piazza Salimbeni - Our walk continues into the medieval historic center, where you’ll encounter the “Contrade” - the districts and teams of the Palio, each with its own symbol, flag, and motto. These are a source of pride for the Sienese people, who take this event very seriously. Your guide will share stories of historical rivalries between them, and you’ll visit one of the Contrade to fully grasp this local tradition.
-
Piazza del Campo - The route will take you through the charming alleys leading to the stunning Piazza del Campo, a unique shell-shaped square featuring the majestic Palazzo Pubblico and its tall tower, which speaks of a glorious past and hides dark secrets. Here, you’ll hear more fascinating tales about the Palio, as this is where the horse race occurs twice a year, attracting visitors from around the globe.
It’s time for the first gastronomic stop - a tasting of typical local sweets like ricciarelli biscuits and other delicious treats in a traditional shop, offering a chance to learn about the Sienese culture that best represents the city.
We continue to explore another medieval corner, stopping at our favorite “Vineria” for the next tasting: a delightful Italian “panino” filled with your choice of ingredients and a well-deserved glass of wine. -
Duomo di Siena - A bit more effort will bring you to the city’s summit to admire the stunning Gothic Cathedral and the ancient pilgrims’ hospital, which hosted many travelers in past centuries and contributed to Siena’s greatness in the Middle Ages. The majestic beauty and undeniable elegance will leave you in awe.
-
Via di Citta - Finally, we’ll arrive at a nearby medieval street where our tour concludes. Arrivederci!
