This vast complex was built by Prince Kasyapa at the end of the 5th century. King Kasyapa constructed the garden and palace. Following his death, it reverted to a monastery complex until the 14th century. Anticipating Mogallana’s return, Kasyapa reportedly built his palace atop Sigiriya as both a fortress and a pleasure palace. Mogallana eventually arrived and declared war. Chronicles recount that the battle-elephant altered its course for strategic advantage, but the army misinterpreted this as the King’s retreat, leading them to abandon him. Moggallana restored the capital to Anuradapura, transforming Sigiriya into a monastery complex. The beautifully landscaped water gardens feature a sophisticated water distribution system!
