Highlights
  • Sigiriya -

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is located in the heart of Sri Lanka and is home to the historical remnants of a fortified complex erected in the latter part of the 5th century atop a striking columnar rock formation. In 1982, Sigiriya earned the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage site. The rock’s sheer walls give it the appearance of overhanging its base, and it stands at a height of 1,144 feet above sea level, towering approximately 600 feet above the plains below. King Kashyapa of the Sinhalese dynasty constructed a massive lion-shaped palace on the summit’s expansive grounds, which was meant to serve as a bastion against adversaries. Despite his efforts, King Kashyapa was overthrown in 495, leading to the palace’s decay. Over time, Sigiriya transformed into a sacred pilgrimage site and has since become a favored destination for tourists. The journey to the peak begins at the lion’s colossal paws, which are among the few surviving elements of the once grand palace.

Cooking class and food are worth it - The village tour consisted of an ox wagon ride, about 500m- rather dispensable. Then followed a short walk to the lake, where we were taken by two canoes to the museum village - bring sun protection! One has a beautiful view of Sigiriya over a water lily pond. The cooking class and food was great! The preparation with the typical equipment was presented. For the return trip there was a tuktuk. Overall, everyone was very friendly and devoted!! Time about 2 hours. You can do it, but you don't have to!
