Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - “Sigiriya, also referred to as Lion Rock, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the heart of Sri Lanka. This ancient rock fortress stands as one of the most iconic landmarks of the island nation, showcasing the brilliance and architectural skill of ancient civilizations. Sigiriya towers 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains, commanding the landscape with its majestic presence. The name “Lion Rock” originates from the enormous lion-shaped gateway carved into the rock face at the fortress’s entrance. Although only the lion’s paws remain today due to erosion, these remnants still offer visitors a glimpse into the original grandeur of the design.”

Galle Dutch Fort - Galle is located in the south of Sri Lanka. A journey to the past reveals remnants of a Dutch past at a World Heritage Site. Galle has been a hub of foreign trade since the dawn of commerce. The Dutch Fort, declared a World Heritage Site, surrounds the older part of the town and is situated on a headland with three sides overlooking the sea. The ramparts of the Fort are over 2.5 km in circumference, providing a pleasant and interesting walk. Historian Sir Emerson Tennant claimed that Galle was the ancient biblical city of Tarshish, said to have traded with King Solomon, the Persians, and the Egyptians. In 1505, a Portuguese fleet led by Lorenzo de Almeida, heading for the Maldives, accidentally drifted into Galle. Upon hearing a cock crowing (“Galo” in Portuguese), it is said they named the town. Another explanation for the name is from the Sinhala word for rock, “Gala,” many of which are found in the harbor area.
