- Hagar Qim Temples - Next, the tour will continue to the megalithic temple complex of Ħaġar Qim, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Situated on the southern edge of the island on a hilltop with views of the sea and the islet of Filfa, these temples rank among the oldest religious sites globally. The World Heritage Sites Committee describes them as “unique architectural masterpieces” dating back to c. 3600–3200 BC; they are over 5000 years old, predating the Egyptian pyramids by about 1000 years!
The site features a central building and the remnants of at least two additional structures. The expansive forecourt and the grand façade of the central structure follow the typical design of Maltese prehistoric temples. Along the outer wall, visitors can see some of the largest megaliths used in constructing these structures, including a 5.2-meter-high stone and a massive megalith estimated to weigh nearly 20 tonnes.
- Blue Grotto (Il-Hnejja) - The tour concludes at Wied Iż-Żurrieq (Żurrieq Valley), where visitors can explore the stunning Blue Grotto and admire the spectacular scenery and breathtaking views surrounding the entire area. The Blue Grotto is a series of seven caves located along the island’s southern coast. This complex includes a grand and impressive main arch, approximately 30 meters high, along with a network of six other caves, including the Honeymoon Cave, the Cat’s Cave, and the beautiful Reflection Cave.
Featured in numerous films shot in Malta due to its natural beauty, captivating structure, and ideal location, this highly popular site draws thousands of visitors annually, many of whom choose to experience the remarkable grotto up-close through local boat tours. Weather permitting, visitors will also have the time and opportunity to explore the grotto and caves by taking one of the boat trips offered by several local providers, available for a small fee payable on-site.
