- The Limestone Heritage Park & Gardens - Situated in the traditional Maltese village of Siġġiewi, The Limestone Heritage Park & Gardens is a distinctive and innovative attraction that showcases the beauty of Maltese stone and its remarkable 22 million years of history. Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience in the island’s diverse history through an engaging audio-visual presentation and an informative audio-guided tour, offering deep insights into Malta’s fascinating history and rich culture.
- Hagar Qim Temples - The tour continues with a visit to the megalithic temple complex of Ħaġar Qim, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Located on the southern edge of the island on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfa, these temples are among the oldest religious sites on Earth. Described by the World Heritage Sites committee as “unique architectural masterpieces,” they date back to c. 3600-3200 BC, making them over 5000 years old and predating the Egyptian pyramids by about 1000 years!
The site features a central building and the remains of at least two additional structures. The large forecourt and monumental façade of the central structure follow the typical pattern of Maltese Prehistoric Temples. Along the external wall, visitors can see some of the largest megaliths used in these structures, including a 5.2-meter-high stone and a massive megalith estimated to weigh nearly 20 tonnes.
- Blue Grotto (Il-Hnejja) - The next destination is Żurrieq Valley, where visitors can explore the magnificent Blue Grotto and admire the stunning scenery and breathtaking views surrounding the area. The Blue Grotto is a complex of seven caves along the southern coast of the island, featuring a grand and impressive main arch approximately 30 meters high, along with a system of six other caves, including the Honeymoon Cave, the Cat’s Cave, and the beautiful Reflection Cave.
This popular site, featured in numerous films shot in Malta due to its natural beauty, enchanting structure, and ideal location, such as Cutthroat Island (1995), The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), and Troy (2004), attracts many visitors each year. Many choose to see the stunning grotto up close, and weather permitting, there is an opportunity to visit the grotto and caves by taking a boat trip (note: boat trip is not included in the price).
- Marsaxlokk - The tour proceeds to the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk. As the largest fishing harbor in Malta since antiquity, the majority of fish sold on the islands are caught by fishermen from this village. Traditional “luzzu” (brightly colored traditional fishing boats) and larger fishing vessels line the sheltered harbor in a vibrant display that has been the subject of countless photoshoots.
- Marsaxlokk Open Market - Marsaxlokk is also renowned for its delightful restaurants and charming cafés along its promenade, as well as its large open-air market. The market offers a wide variety of food and durable goods, including fish, locally produced honey and fruit jams, traditional sweets and other delicacies, local wines and liquors, souvenirs, clothes, shoes, traditional lacework and crafts, custom jewelry, accessories, and more.
- Ghar Dalam Cave and Museum - The tour concludes with a visit to Għar Dalam Cave, Malta’s oldest prehistoric site, dating back to c. 5200 BC. Għar Dalam (meaning Cave of Darkness) is a 144-meter-long phreatic tube and cave, or cul-de-sac, located on the outskirts of the village of Birżebbuġa.
The cave contains the bone remains of animals that became extinct in Malta at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, such as the dwarf elephant, hippopotamus, giant swan, deer, and bear, which have not lived on the Maltese islands for thousands of years. It is also the site where the earliest evidence of human settlement in Malta, approximately 7,400 years ago, was discovered. Due to its paleontological and archaeological significance, this site is considered one of Malta’s most important national monuments.
