Former residence of the Romanian royal family, the castle was built in an elegant Neo-Renaissance and Gothic revival style at the wish of King Carol I of Romania between 1873 and 1914. Peles Castle is one of the most important historic edifices in Romania. With unique character, a historical and artistic value, it definitely is an important monument of its kind in 19th century Europe. In 1883 Peles Castle was officially inaugurated serving as the summer residence of the royal family until 1948.
