• Park and National Palace of Pena - Time to visit Sintra’s ex-libris, one of the most renowned palaces in the region. The Pena Palace, inspired by Bavarian palaces in Germany, stands as the finest example of Portuguese Romantic architecture. Construction began in 1839 under the direction of King Fernando II of Saxe Coburg-Gotha, who commissioned it for his marriage to Dona Maria II. He acquired the ruins of the Monastery of Our Lady of Pena and transformed it into a palace that captivates thousands of visitors each year.
• Sintra - We will now explore the center of Sintra, with its charming alleys and narrow streets. Parking is usually a challenge here, but this won’t be an issue as we will have a driver and a guide to accompany you. They will show you the best shops and take you to the famous Piriquita bakery to sample Sintra’s local pastries. Sintra is a fantastic place with a high concentration of historical monuments and intriguing tourist attractions. Here, you’ll find over 10 national monuments, including opulent palaces, ancient ruins, and decorative palatial houses scattered across the region’s hills, often along challenging walking paths.
• Cabo da Roca - Between Sintra and Cascais lies Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent. As the illustrious Portuguese poet Luis de Camões wrote, it is “where the earth ends and the sea begins” (Canto VIII). Its imposing lighthouse, perched 165 meters above the sea and built in 1772, highlights the historical significance of this location in maritime studies, making it one of Portugal’s most emblematic sites.
• Guincho Beach - The guide will recommend a restaurant based on your preferences, whether in Sintra with a typical local eatery or in the Guincho region, known for its famous Cascais restaurants specializing in fish and seafood.
• Cascais - In Cascais, our driver will drop us off by the Bay, and our guide will provide an introduction to this charming area. Today, Cascais is a fantastic place to live or enjoy a vacation, with its small fishing boats adding to the picturesque scenery. For centuries, the Portuguese royal family chose Cascais for their holidays, attracting the nobility as well. In the center, particularly at Largo de Camões, you’ll find numerous craft shops.
• Estoril - On our way to Lisbon, we’ll make a brief stop in Estoril, known for its role in European espionage during World War II. Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels, lived here. Estoril is also home to the Estoril Casino, considered the largest in Europe.
