Park and National Palace of Pena - The National Palace of Pena is like a sacred jewel crowning the Sintra Mountains. The surrounding park, in harmony with the palace’s fairy-tale character, evokes feelings of mystery and discovery. In its corners, the eyes are lost in enchantment. The colorful tones of the palace, the greatest exponent of Romanticism in Portugal and the eternal work of King-Artist Ferdinand II, open doors to the imagination of all who visit, and the infinite shades of green painting the surrounding park create an idyllic setting, often under the characteristic mist of the Sintra mountains. Like something out of a fairy tale, this place makes all generations who pass by dream and marvel at it.
Sintra National Palace - A stop at the National Palace of Sintra to taste the traditional sweets of Sintra.
Quinta da Regaleira - In the 19th century, Sintra was one of the first cradles of romantic architecture in Europe. Its unique climate and consequent nature attracted those who, touched by the landscape, dared to enhance it with stunning architecture in an Edenic harmony conducive to the contemplation of beauty and the sublime. In this picturesque setting, we find the Quinta da Regaleira on the outskirts of Sintra’s historic center. Designed and built in the late 19th century, it reflects the sensibility and cultural, philosophical, and scientific interests of its main owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), along with the virtuosity of the Italian architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936). The culture and creativity of these two personalities resulted in an eclectic-revivalist architectural ensemble, with a particular focus on Manueline, Renaissance, Medieval, and Classical styles.
Park and Palace of Monserrate - A retreat for writers, Monserrate attracted numerous foreign travelers, especially the English, who praised its beauty in travel accounts and engravings. When Francis Cook, a wealthy 19th-century English industrialist and great art collector, visited the site, he was fascinated. From this passion was born a masterpiece of Romanticism: the Park and Palace of Monserrate. Francis Cook realized his dream, transforming Monserrate into what we know today, with its lush gardens – dazzling visitors with exotic species from the four corners of the world – and a palace that is a true ode to romantic architecture, to Francis Cook’s refined taste, and to the genius of architect James Knowles Jr., who combined various influences there. However, the history of this enchanting place has been marked by many vicissitudes. Behind its profusely worked majestic walls, Monserrate hides very different pasts, which have always exalted its natural beauty.
Cabo da Roca - About 150 meters from the sea, here you can have a comprehensive view of the Sintra Mountains and the coast, making it worth the visit. Historical records point to the existence of a fort at Cabo da Roca in the 18th century. It played an important role in monitoring the entrance to Lisbon, forming a defensive line along the coast, especially during the Peninsular Wars. Today, only vestiges remain, besides the lighthouse which continues to be an important point for navigation. It is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and is one of the reasons for the interest in the hiking trails that can be taken along the coast.
Boca do Inferno - Boca do Inferno is located on the Costa da Guia, west of the town of Cascais, in Portugal. The name “Boca do Inferno” (Hell’s Mouth) given to this place is due to the morphological analogy and the tremendous and frightening impact of the waves felt there. The characteristic that composes the rock on the cliff is carbonate in nature. Erosion exerted by the action of rainwater, which contains dissolved carbon dioxide, causes the dissolution of the carbonate. Through this process, cavities and caves are formed within the limestones. It is quite possible that the site was once an ancient cave. With the collapse of the upper layers, the cave was destroyed, leaving a huge open cavity. With unique characteristics, it is a leisure spot where one can enjoy a divine landscape and magnificent sunsets, only overshadowed by the not infrequent suicides committed on its dangerous and unprotected cliff.
Cascais - An elegant fishing village, which today stands out for its modernity and irreverence, in a classic and picturesque setting.
