Located centrally in the Balkan Peninsula, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a blend of both Mediterranean and Alpine ecosystems, resulting in an abundant variety of flora and fauna that is among the most diverse in Europe.
A significant part of Bosnia and Herzegovina is characterized by highland terrain. The Southern Alps, also known as the Dinaric Alps, extend from northwest Slovenia, slicing through Bosnia and Herzegovina, entering into Montenegro, and conclude in the Prokletija Mountains adjacent to the Albanian border. Herzegovina is home to the tallest and wildest sections of this mountain chain, which historically served as a shield against Roman invaders and delayed the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia. The middle region of Bosnia combines rugged mountains with lush, undulating hills blanketed with evergreen forests and intricately woven with innumerable freshwater streams and rivers.
